Myanmar faces rapid rise in COVID cases, lack of oxygen supply

Myanmar is facing a rapid increase in COVID-19 patients and lack of oxygen supply. The situation comes as the country has been consumed by a bitter and violent political conflict since the military ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi from power in February.

Myanmar faced last year’s escalation by severely restricting travel and obtaining vaccines from India and China. Their expulsions came less than a week after health workers were first forced out. After the takeover people left military hospitals and medical workers led a popular civil disobedience movement.

Myanmar’s new rulers have ordered oxygen plants to operate at full capacity, including converting industrial oxygen for patients’ needs.
