According to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) On ‘Crime in India – 2020’, a total of 66,01,285 cognizable offenses including 42,54,356 Indian Penal Code (IPC) offenses and 23,46,929 Special and Local Law (SLL) offenses were registered in 2020.
This is an increase of 14,45,127 (28 per cent) in registration of cases over 2019 (51,56,158 cases), while the crime rate per lakh population increased from 385.5 in 2019 to 487.8 in 2020.

NCRB data shows that there has been a decline in traditional crimes such as theft, dacoity and assault on women and children in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. During 2020, the registration of cases under IPC (Indian Penal Code) increased by 31.9 per cent, while SLL (Special and Local Law) offenses increased by 21.6 per cent as compared to 2019.
The percentage share of IPC cases during 2020 was 64.4 per cent while SLL cases accounted for 35.6 per cent of the total cognizable offenses.

Most of the crimes against women under the IPC were registered under ‘cruelty by husband or his relatives’ (30 per cent), followed by ‘assault with intent to outrage the modesty of women’ (23 per cent), ‘abduction of women and Kidnapping’ (16.8 percent) and ‘rape’ (7.5 percent).

India registered 50,035 cases of cybercrime in 2020, an 11.8 percent increase in such crimes over the previous year. The rate of cyber crime (incidents per lakh population) in the country also increased from 3.3 per cent in 2019 to 3.7 per cent in 2020. In 2019, 44,735 cases of cybercrime were registered in the country, as against 27,248 in 2018, the figures for the respective years showed.
