Lakhbir, the youth who was murdered by Nihangs on the Singhu border, accusing him of sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib, was addicted to drugs. Lakhbir alias Titu, 36, was a resident of village Cheema in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district. He was living with his sister and niece in the house of his deceased aunt in the village. Being troubled by his drug habit, five years ago, his wife also left him and went to her maternal home with three daughters. The wife has demanded that whoever has done such an act should be brought to the fore.

When the whole village came to know about Titu’s action and his death, around 10 am, everyone was in shock. When the Bhaskar team also reached the village, the people standing on the main road of the village explained the address of Titu’s house. The team reached Titu’s house after passing through unpaved and narrow streets. It was a two room house. The verandah was also uncooked, where two floors were laid. Only his sister and one or two people and the police were at his house.

At present, the Cheema police has reached the village of the deceased and is engaged in interrogation. He was living in village Cheema, but originally belonged to Sarai Amanat Khan near village Kalas. Father’s name was Darshan Singh, who died about 6 years ago. Troubled by his addiction, wife Jaspreet Kaur decides to leave Lakhbir. She went to her maternal home five years ago with three daughters Tanya (12), Sonia (10) and Kuldeep Kaur (8). After this, Lakhbir also started living at his aunt Mahinder Kaur’s house.

Titu’s sister Raj Kaur told that her husband Manga had died about 10 years ago. After the death of her husband, she used to come and live with her aunt. Five years ago, brother Titu’s wife also left and he too came and started living in village Cheema. Despite all this, Titu did not give up his addiction. He used to get intoxicated by selling household items. No one gave him a job in the village because of his drug habit. The deceased Titu used to go to the Haveliyan village and do the work of putting fodder.

Raj Kaur, the sister of the deceased, informed that after coming to the village Cheema, he used to sit with the Nihangs. He had left the house on October 13, saying that he would go to Mandi. It is suspected that someone took him to Delhi with the lure of money or by luring him.

After the incident, the wife also reached Cheema village

Around 10 o’clock in the morning the news of Lakhbir alias Titu’s death had reached his village Cheema. When his wife Jaspreet Kaur came to know about the incident, she went into shock. Two elder daughters Tanya and Sonia are in a bad condition. After which Jaspreet left her at her maternal home and reached the village Cheema along with her younger daughter, mother and brother-in-law. The wife is sitting on the bed at a corner in the missing house. She says that even though she had left Titu five years ago, the attachment was still there. Titu used to talk to daughters on the phone.

Wife Jaspreet Kaur says that Titu was not bad at heart nor did he ever wish anyone bad. Drug addiction was such a habit that he could not give up. He is very sure that he has done this act only under the influence of someone. Somebody has trapped him in his words. Somebody has got this work done by giving greed of money or money.

Everyone knew about Titu’s drug habit. This was the reason that he used to work by going to Haveliyan village. If he asked for work from anyone in the village, everyone would refuse him. Village elder Sulkhan Singh informed that Titu had a habit of asking for money. He used to come intoxicated by taking 10-20 rupees from the people of the village.

Wife’s demand, the government should bring to the fore the person who got the act done

Wife Jaspreet’s family has raised a demand that Titu can never take this step. If someone has misled him, he should be exposed. They demand from the government that the truth should be found out by bringing the person who made Titu such an act in front.
