HYDERABAD: The Congress has fielded a woman candidate for the ensuing by-election to Munugode assembly constituency in Telangana with AICC president Sonia Gandhi approving the name of Palvai Sravanthi.
She is the daughter of Palvai Govardhan Reddy, a five-term MLA from Munugode seat. The family has considerable influence among the voters. Sravanthi is the only woman candidate announced so far from among the three main political parties.
While Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy is the likely candidate from the BJP, TRS president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has not announced the party candidate for the crucial by-poll.
Congress leaders said fielding Sravanthi is an added advantage as there are over 1.10 lakh women electors in the constituency. Though Ch Krishna Reddy, a realtor was also in the race for the party ticket, the party high command finalized Sravanthi as she is from a strong Congress family background.
Also, senior leaders from Nalgonda district and Munugode constituency were in favour of Sravanthi stating she would be a formidable candidate.
The election commission is yet to come out with by poll notification but is expected to do it soon. The byelection was necessitated as sitting MLA Komatireddy Raj Goipal Reddy of the Congress resigned both the Congress and MLA post and joined the BJP.
