Mumbai opens its first restaurant-on-wheels to the public at CSMT today

Railway officials in Mumbai are all set to open the city’s first restaurant on wheels to the public today. The train’s coach-turned-restaurant is located at the entrance of Platform No. 18, near Heritage Gali at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The eatery will offer a capacity of 40 diners at a time.

According to a report in FreePress Journal, the restaurant will offer a wide variety of cuisines including veg and non-veg. Apart from dine-in, there will also be a mini cafe and a takeaway window for juice. Once the restaurant is operational, people will have the option to order food through online food delivery apps as well.

The theme inside the restaurant is said to depict the sights of Mumbai with a rail-theme. The restaurant will have ample parking space with easy connectivity to the suburbs. According to the report, the authorities will try to cooperate with Mumbai Darshan Tour once the restaurant opens to the public.

Preparations are on in full swing to open the restaurant, although it was put on hold for some time due to cyclone Gulab. The blue coating has been replaced by the mustard color and the black and brown paint have been mixed. The prices of food items have been finalized by the contractor in consultation with the officials of Central Railway. The officials are expecting a revenue of around Rs 42 per lakh from the contractor. Due to the limited space of the coach, the equipment for the kitchen was retrofitted. Keeping in mind the safe distance inside the coach-built restaurant, the furniture for the on-site dinner has been manufactured. Final touch up and painting work has also been completed.

The authority has decided to open more such restaurants along the Central and Western Lines in the city. The report quoted a railway official as saying that other restaurants are being planned at places like Kurla LTT, Thane and Kalyan. The process for the same will start soon, the official added.

Similarly, Western Railway officials are also planning to open such restaurants at Bandra Terminus, Borivali and Surat. The authorities had checked the feasibility of such a restaurant at Andheri station as well, but have not zeroed in on any of these stations.
