The Western Railway (WR) on Wednesday launched a mobile application that will allow commuters to check the live status of trains on its suburban network spread between Churchgate station in south Mumbai and Dahanu in nearby Palghar district. Western Railway has fitted GPS tracking devices in all its suburban trains, which will enable the app to provide their real-time position. Thakur said that with this app developed in collaboration with a private firm, passengers would not only be able to get the live location of the train on the map but would also be able to see it running.

“In just three simple steps, passengers can view the live location. Passengers can directly find the nearest stations on the map, type the source station and track the train of their choice to find out how close they are to the train or away, plan their travel,” he said.

Thakur said that passengers would get live train updates, announcements, latest timetable, maps of major railway stations and authentic information about their facilities. The software also provides information on Mumbai Metro services and buses, and has a section where users can give their feedback.

Passengers will have easy access to important railway and medical emergency contact numbers, and passengers can use the app to navigate to nearby tourist spots and nearby stations.

Western Railway said that the app is also Divyangjan friendly. Thakur said that Divyang passengers operating mobile phones through voice commands can easily find the live location of their train with the help of Google Assistant. The Central Railway had started live tracking of its suburban trains through the app last July.
