Mumbai local trains completely closed: BMC starts offline verification for passengers at 53 stations

An offline verification process for COVID-19 vaccination and issuance of monthly passes to fully vaccinated people to enable them on board local trains Will start at 53 suburban stations in Mumbai from Wednesday, the city’s civic body said on Tuesday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday announced that the public, who have completed 14 days of receiving the second dose of coronavirus vaccines, will be allowed to board suburban trains from August 15.

A release from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that citizens who have completed 14 days after the second dose need to have the COVID-19 vaccination final certificate for verification to obtain a travel pass. It is necessary to carry a hard copy and a photo ID.

“After verification, eligible people will be allowed to travel from August 15, 2021,” the release said, adding that a total of 358 help desks will be set up at 53 railway stations falling under the jurisdiction of the BMC.

In addition, help desks will be set up by the concerned authorities at 56 suburban stations falling in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (outside BMC limits).

The civic body said that the help desks will be operational in two consecutive sessions from 7 am to 11 pm. “Citizens can approach the nearest station to their home for verification and crowds should be avoided,” it said.

The BMC warned that strict legal action would be taken for producing fake vaccination certificates to obtain passes.

Suburban train services in the metropolis were suspended for the general public in April this year when the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic was at its peak in Maharashtra. At present, only government employees and employees of essential services are allowed to travel in local trains.

On reaching near the ticket window at the railway station, citizens can find the help desk set up by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (or the concerned Municipal Corporation / Municipal Council / Local Self Government). These help desks will function in two consecutive sessions i.e. from 7 am to 3 pm and from 3 pm to 11 pm.
