Meanwhile, the daily detections in Mumbai dropped to below 900 (834) on Thursday, a day after adding over 1,100 cases a day before. Fatalities in Mumbai dropped to single digits: the city added seven deaths, taking the total caseload to 10. 48 lakh and 16,647 deaths.
Suresh Kakani, AMC, said the share of symptomatic patients among those coming positive is in the range of 12% to 13%. Most people who are testing positive have extremely mild symptoms, and fewer are requiring hospitalisation. On Thursday, 105 patients got hospitalized, of which 26 required oxygen. A civic doctor said that even of those who require oxygen, most need 4 liters to 5 liters. “Cases that are critical purely due to Covid are very few,” the doctor said.
Dr Avinash Supe, who heads the Covid death audit committee, said that almost 90% of deaths are found in senior citizens with comorbidities. “It is there fore important that people with underlying ailments consult a doctor on time,” he added.
Of the 7 deaths reported from Mumbai, five patients had comorbidities. All 7 deaths were of senior citizens.
State officials said with cases declining across dis- tricts, it is likely fatalities will stay high for another week. “Fatalities generally report a surge two weeks after cases touch the peak, and they come down a few days after cases start declining,” said an official. The official said that with the third wave of Covid being milder, it has not led to a rush in people wanting to get vaccinated in many smaller districts.
With decline in cases, active cases continue to drop in the state and city. There are 1.5 lakh active cases in the state; Mumbai has 7,601 cases.
