First things first, it becomes completely clear that director Anubhav Sinha already has a lot on his plate. to understand the conflicts in the northeastern part of India Literature has always been scarce. And even if it was available, interest was never there. Sinha falters on several occasions; Still, he doesn’t eat it. The main reason for this is the cast.
Ayushmann Khurrana plays the role of Aman, an undercover officer working for the government. He is deceitful and attractive, a first for him. Andrea Cevichusa makes her debut as Aido, a boxer who seeks to make a mark for herself amidst all the chaos. It is refreshing to see JD Chakraborty on screen, who retains his unabashed charisma. Manoj Pahwa is also standing outside. A big government official who is too smart to cheat. But Loitongbam Dorendra is doing justice to his screen time which will impress you. An old revolutionary who is now preparing for a peace deal with the government. His expressions are gloomy, yet stingy as a man who has seen a lot of violence.
The screenplay lags on several points. The first half may leave you twitching in your seats. Still, Sinha manages to pull you back in the second half, to an extent, somehow. A rare feat. Perhaps, what caught your attention is the authenticity it emphasizes. The characters are real and rooted. The questions asked by him are relevant.
There is no doubt that Sinha is asking questions here. What is identity? How does one define it within the framework of a nation? How is it that multiple identities form the shield of nationality? And how much freedom does the nation give to express itself?
But it takes a lot to build up the form and very little time. What holds the film back is its script which fails to generate interest in the film for an hour. For a film set in the center of an insurgency, it was important to keep the audience engaged throughout. If it weren’t for its cast, many would have tested your patience. Thankfully, it is not so.
