Sangma’s statement comes weeks after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the assembly that Mukroh is part of his state.

Rejecting his Assam counterpart’s claim, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday told the Assembly that Mukroh village on the disputed inter-state border, where six people were killed in a violent clash last year, is part of the hill state.

He said that the residents of Mukroh were the beneficiaries of various schemes of his government.

Sangma’s statement comes weeks after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the assembly that Mukroh is a part of his state.

“I have clearly said that Mukroh is a part of Meghalaya. This is what the facts and figures indicate. Other statements may have been made, but our stand is clear,” Sangma told the assembly.

“The census code states that Mukroh comes under West Jaintia Hills district. Elections were held and Mukroh also voted during the recent Meghalaya Assembly elections. The village has two polling stations and is part of the Mokayaw constituency,” he said while replying to a supplementary question raised by MLA Adelbert Nongrum of the Voice of the People’s party.

Five forest guards from Mukroh and one from Assam were killed in a clash on the disputed border on November 22 last year, in which a truck carrying “illegally cut timber” was allegedly stopped by neighboring forest personnel Was. State PTI JOP ACD ACD
