Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan aka Iman Vellani Reveals How a WhatsApp Forward Helped Her Bag MCU Series

The release of the first episode of Miss Marvel skyrocketed the popularity of the titular character Iman Vellani and the MCU series lauded for its South-Asian representation and lead their show with a Muslim character. However, a Pakistani-Canadian actress, Vellani, who made her showbiz debut with this mini-series, says that initially she thought her casting call was spam. During a press conference of the show which was attended by News18, the 19-year-old actress shared how her casting as Kamala Khan went through the ‘most gray’ way.

When asked to share the incident, she began by saying, “This could be the grayest way,” and continued to tell us the story. “February 2020, I get WhatsApp forward. I thought it was a scam. I don’t know what the casting calls look like, but they’re not white pages that say, ‘Miss Marvel, Disney+ and headshot and resume here.'”

She continued that the casting call turned out to be genuine and sent her a very academic resume and photos she had and called back from them. However, the actress revealed that she was scared of failure. “I was making excuses for myself out of fear of failure. And, like, it was going to be night at 3:00, I sent in my self-tapes. I was like, my 10 year old is going to hate me if I don’t even try. And two days later I get a call,” she said.

“They’re like, do you have a lawyer? We want to fly you to L.A. and I was like, I have a math test, but okay. And next thing, I’m in L.A. with my dad.” ,” he continued. Soon after, the pandemic hit and they sent him an email confirming that he had received the part.

Talking about what makes the character of Miss Marvel stand out amongst the rest of the young superheroes in the MCU, Iman shared, “Ms. Marvel always understood fan culture at such a cellular level, and it really made the story stand out. Elevated in a really unique way. She’s a 16-year-old super-powered kid, well, we’ve seen that before. But she’s also a fan of every other hero within the MCU canon. That charm and excitement is shared with real-life Marvel fans, so we can relate to that. She reacts how will we be when she gets the powers. ,

“And culture and religion were never the core things of his personality, it was just part of his life. We didn’t want to make a show about a Pakistani Muslim, it was about this Avengers-loving, fanfic writing dork, Which happens to a Pakistani Muslim. I think we have balanced it pretty well,” concluded Iman.

Miss Marvel is the 7th mini-series of the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring Iman Vellani, Matt Lintz, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapoor and Sagar Shaikh, the series is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
