Márquez has been a top rider in MotoGP for the past decade, having won world titles in his top class in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The Spaniard had previously won two more world titles in the lower categories.

But he has struggled to be at his best as he broke his right humerus in an accident in the 2020 season opener. Now he will be stabbed just 18 months after his last surgery.

“Unfortunately, I will have to take a break from the 2022 season which will keep me away from competition for some time,” Marquez said on Saturday. “I have reduced the discomfort in my right arm to be able to compete in the Grand Prix, but I still have significant limitations in my humerus that do not allow me to steer the bike properly and achieve those goals. which I have always set for myself.”

The operation will take place at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. His Repsol Honda team said Marquez would travel to the United States on Tuesday. He will return to Spain.

The date of his return to competition will depend on the pace of his recovery.

Marquez’s last race before surgery will be the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, when he starts on the 11th on the grid. He is at 10th position in the points table.
