On Thursday, the second anniversary of the end of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, most shops remained closed in some parts of Srinagar, though the situation remained peaceful, officials said here. While shops were closed in many areas of the city, including Lal Chowk city centre, shops were open in other areas such as Anantnag district of south Kashmir and parts of Budgam, Ganderbal and Kupwara.

However, shopkeepers in many areas, including Lal Chowk, alleged that the police was forcing them to keep their establishments open. Many of them claimed that the police broke the locks of their shops. Officials said public transport remained off the roads in many areas of the city.

Although no strike was called by any separatist group, it was called off in many areas. The police termed as “fake” a letter calling for the bandh in the name of hardline Hurriyat Conference president Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who is under house arrest.

He said that action is being taken against those who uploaded or shared the letter. Officials said the situation in the Valley is peaceful so far.
