Moscow Blames Ukraine for Blasts on Russian Airfields

Drone attacks in Ukraine hit two airfields in the Saratov and Ryazan regions on Monday, killing three people, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

“The Kyiv regime attempted to attack the Diagilevo airfield in the Ryazan region and the Engels airfield in the Saratov region on Monday morning,” the ministry said in a statement, killing three servicemen.

The drone was intercepted with the aim of “interrupting Russian long-range aircraft”, the ministry said, but debris fell and exploded in the airspace.

Four other soldiers were injured and taken to medical facilities.

According to the statement, two aircraft suffered minor damage.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been briefed about the incidents.

“From all the relevant services, the president regularly receives information about everything that is happening,” Peskov said.

In the same statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said it launched a “large-scale attack on Ukrainian military command systems and related defence, communications, energy and military facilities” at around 1200 GMT.

“All 17 targets were hit,” the ministry said.
