When a Nilgai arrived in front of the Delhi-bound Kalindi Express, the vacuum brakes of the train became active and the train stopped there. Meanwhile, the arrival of Purushottam Express was signaled. Its speed was more than 100 kilometers per hour. Its driver saw that a train was already standing on the track, but they could not do anything. After few seconds, Purushottam Express rammed into Kalindi Express from behind. According to government figures, 305 people were killed and 393 were injured in the accident.
