Patna: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Sunday said more than 25,000 women were working in Bihar Police which is the highest number of women in police in any state in the country.
Addressing the 10th meeting under his ‘Samaj Sudhar Abhiyan‘ at Bapu Sabhagar in the state capital here, Nitish said he provided 35 percent reservation to women in police and all other services of the state government. Resultantly, more than 25,000 women were today working in the state police. “Even the states bigger than Bihar do not have such a large number of women in their police department,” he said amidst applause from the audience comprising a large number of women workers from Jeevika.
Recalling the steps taken by his government for empowerment of women, the CM said his government provided 50 percent reservation to women in the Panchayti Raj institutions (PRIs) and urban local bodies (ULBs) way back in 2006. Then, Bihar was the first state to provide a 50 percent quota to women. “Then, a large number of women held different posts in the PRIs and ULBs after winning the elections, but a few people criticized the move and spoke against me,” he said.
Recounting the benefits of enforcement of total prohibition in the state since April 2016, he said a recent assessment has revealed that more than 1.64 crore people in Bihar left consumption of liquor since the enforcement of prohibition in the state. “I have asked the officials for conducting a fresh assessment on how many people left liquor,” he said.
He also said that the state government was now taking swift action against the traders of illicit liquor. Now, drones and helicopters were also being used by the police and prohibition officials to keep a close vigil on the movement of liquor traders. Special vigil was being maintained on both the banks of river Ganga through drones. So far, 26 drones were being used to keep a watch on the operation of illicit liquor traders, he said.
“So far, more than 2.17 lakh raids were conducted to search out illicit liquor. No person involved in production and sale of illicit liquor will be spared. Recently, 8 people died of consuming illicit liquor in Nalanda district. Strict actions are being taken against the persons involved in the sale of illicit liquor in the affected areas,” the CM said.
He further called upon women, particularly the Didis of Jeevika, that the campaign for social reforms must continue in the state even after the end of all 12 meetings under the ongoing Samaj Sudhar Abhiyan. “Today’s is the 10th meeting. I have to address two more meetings in Purnia and Madhepura. But this campaign against addiction, dowry system and child marriage will continue across the state,” he said.
Thousands of Jeevika workers from Patna and Nalanda districts attended the CM’s programme.
