In another case, a 33-year-old recently divorced woman had an abortion during her marriage because the husband was not ready for a child. After their separation, she was keen to have a child and opted to freeze her eggs. She is planning to conceive after she is ready or after remarriage.
“The number of women opting for egg freezing has definitely increased and more than anything, the level of awareness has increased. People from different walks of life, who have chosen it, are coming forward and speaking about it. In the last five years, the number of women asking about egg freezing has increased. On an average, we get 15-20 cases per year. People inquire about the procedure not only from traditional clinic visits, but also through online consultations or social media. Whenever we host Facebook Live, for example, questions arise regularly about egg freezing,” said Dr P Priyanka Reddy, Consultant Infertility Specialist, Maternity Hospital, Indiranagar, Bengaluru.
Aviva Pinto Rodrigues, Fertility Consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Basaveshwara Nagar, Bengaluru said that the causes of cold can be clinical or social. “It depends from person to person. Clinical egg freezing is where women with serious health conditions like cancer choose to freeze their eggs because treatments like chemo will affect their fertility. In such cases women choose to freeze eggs. Then there is social egg freezing, where a healthy woman chooses to freeze her eggs of her own choice. Many people want to focus on education and career development before taking on the responsibility of motherhood For such women, egg freezing solves the dilemma of the difficult biological clock,” she said.
The average age of women who have opted for egg freezing is now 30-35 years, compared to 38-40 years five years ago. The cost is around Rs 1 lakh and the eggs can be preserved for about 10 years, or for a longer period if required. For example, if a woman freezes her eggs in her teens or early twenties because of health conditions such as cancer or a history of early menopause in the family, she will need more time before deciding to become pregnant. Can be preserved for a long time, said Dr. Priyanka.
“It is a time-sensitive process. Egg quality and quantity decline as a woman gets older. It is advisable for women to plan their egg freezing until their early thirties. Also, it is important to dispel the misconception that this is a surefire way to ensure eternal fertility. No, not all eggs that have been frozen will be able to be used last. As a woman’s fertility increases With age, there can be complications if frozen eggs are used,” Dr Aviva said on the challenges.
