Monsoon enters northeast; heavy rain likely in Assam, Meghalaya

The Met Office had upgraded its forecast for a normal monsoon on Monday this year

The IMD on Thursday said that after a brief period of calm, the Bay of Bengal branch of the Southwest Monsoon has swung into action and entered the north-eastern parts of the country and heavy rains over Assam and Meghalaya in the next two days. There is a possibility of rain. , “Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into some parts of northwest Bay of Bengal, some more parts of northeast and east-central Bay of Bengal and most parts of Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland.” India Meteorological Department said.

On Wednesday, monsoon had covered Bengaluru, Chikmagalur, Karwar. Under the influence of monsoon westerly winds from the Arabian Sea over south peninsular India, the Met Office has predicted fairly widespread rainfall over Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep over the next five days.

It has also predicted scattered rain over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the next five days. The maximum temperature is increasing gradually over Northwest India and the Met Office has issued a heat wave warning for Rajasthan, South Punjab and South Haryana for the next two days.

The Met Office had on Monday improved its forecast for a normal monsoon this year. It said the monsoon rains would be fairly well distributed over the entire country, except in the north-eastern parts of the country and the extreme south-western peninsula.
