India’s health ministry issues guidelines on monkeypox
In the wake of increasing reports of monkeypox (MPX) cases in non-endemic countries, India’s health ministry on Tuesday acted proactively and issued ‘Guidelines on Management of Monkeypox Disease’ to ensure advance preparedness across the country.
“No case of monkeypox has been reported in India so far,” the health ministry said in a statement. As per guidelines, a confirmed case for monkeypox virus is confirmed by detection of unique sequences of viral DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and/or sequencing.
“All clinical samples should be taken to the apex laboratory of ICMR-NIV (Pune) through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) network of the respective district/state,” the guidelines said.
Guidelines on the management of monkeypox disease include the epidemiology of the disease (including host, incubation period, duration of communication and method of transmission; contact and case definitions; clinical features and its complexity, diagnosis, case management, risk communication, Includes guidance on infection prevention and control (IPC), including the use of personal protective equipment.

Raising awareness of risk factors, the guidelines elaborate further to raise awareness and educate people about monkeypox virus measures such as avoiding contact with any material of a sick person, isolating the infected patient from others , practicing good hand hygiene, and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.
