A special court here has extended till March 7 the ED custody of Maharashtra Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik in a money laundering probe into the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his associates. Malik was arrested on February 23 at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in south Mumbai after nearly five hours of interrogation.

He was produced before Special Court Judge RN Rokade on Thursday at the end of his initial remand. The court extended his custody till March 7 for further investigation in the case. The court said that keeping in view the fact that the accused was in the hospital from February 25 to 28 (during his previous ED custody) and new facts have also come to the fore during the investigation, the accused is being sent to further custody.

The ED case is based on the recent FIR registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Dawood Ibrahim and others. The NIA had registered its criminal complaint under sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
