After nearly a month of high octane football action, it is down to the final game of their quest to lift the coveted Durand Cup title with FC Goa to determine the champion as local favorite Mohammedan Sporting. The final of the 130th Durand Cup is scheduled for 6:00 PM IST kick-off at Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) on Sunday, October 3, 2021.
Black Panthers would like to repeat their valor of 2013 when they last won the coveted title in New Delhi. Local supporters, who have strongly supported him in the last two bouts, would expect the same. Mohammedan Sporting registered a 4–2 win against FC Bengaluru United on their way to the final. All eyes will be on star players Marcus Joseph, Brandon Vanlalremdica and Nikola Stojanovic, who have been exceptional throughout the tournament and will try to help their team cross the last hurdle.
Gaur, however, entered his maiden Durand Cup final after a 7-6 win over Bengaluru FC (BFC) following a sudden death tie-breaker. They have remained unbeaten in this tournament so far. However, FC Goa will miss important players like Brandon Fernandez, Glenn Martins and Certien Fernandez, who are on duty across India. Mohammad Nemil and Devendra Murgokar will be crucial.
Murgokar is also in the running with Mohammedan’s Marcus Joseph, both of whom are top goal scorers in this tournament, with 5 goals each and the final game to go.
Before the match, FC Goa’s coach, Juan Ferrando Fenol, said, “I am happy as we are playing the final of this tournament but for me, it is a good opportunity and a good experience because we know that the players we are focused on. And when we play these games, the mindset is definitely more aggressive than in a typical friendly game. And also we hope to play a good game against a good club in Kolkata. And of course we hope to do the best tomorrow like our dream is to win games and win trophies for our supporters. “
Sharing his thoughts before the final clash, Black Panthers Head Coach, Andrey Chernyshov said, “Tomorrow is a big game, we will play against one of the best teams in India. This is good. I hope to the supporters, it will be a great evening and a great game. We respect this team but we are not afraid because we know how strong we are. We had a tough road to reach the final but now we are in the final and now we have only one goal – to win this match.
