Mohd Hussain, 27, the son of a labor supervisor from Wadi Bunder area of Mumbai, secured 570 rank in UPSC in his fifth attempt.

An atmosphere of immense joy and excitement was witnessed inside the residence of Ramzan Syed, a labor supervisor in Mumbai’s Wadi Bunder area on Tuesday as his family celebrated their son’s remarkable achievement. Syed’s youngest son Mohammad Hussain has cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) 2022 exam.

Among the 933 candidates selected by UPSC, Mohd Hussain’s achievement was truly extraordinary in the face of social and economic challenges in his life. The 27-year-old’s determination successfully overcame these hurdles. In his fifth attempt, he triumphantly cleared the UPSC exam with an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 570.

Although Ramzan himself did not receive a formal education, he ensured that his son was allowed to receive education in prestigious institutions in the city. Mohammad Hussain attended St. Joseph’s School in Dongri for his schooling and graduated from Elphinstone College in 2018. To prepare for the Civil Services Examination, he enrolled in special coaching programmes. These include the Haj Committee of India’s Civil Services Residential Coaching Institute, a dedicated coaching initiative for Muslim aspirants located at the Haj House in Mumbai. Additionally, he sought guidance from an academy in Pune and an academy at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.

Mohammad Hussain said in an interview that his inclination to pursue a career in the civil services was established at an early stage, influenced by visits to government offices with his father. He expressed his gratitude for his father’s constant encouragement for inspiring him to make positive changes. Hussain acknowledged the unwavering support he received from his family throughout his travels, to the extent that he consciously avoided burdening them with domestic issues.

Notably, his father also accompanied him during the examination. In the close-knit community of the slums of the Wadi Bandar area, Hussain lives with her extended family, which includes her maternal grandparents, parents, elder brothers, their respective husbands and children.

Eagerly waiting for his marksheet, Mohd Hussain aspires to secure a position in either the Indian Police Service (IPS) or the Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
