The defiant pacer responded to the hecklers with his ‘1-0’ gesture directed at the crowd in the stands. The Hyderabad lad showed a 1 with one hand and a 0 with the other, to show that England were still behind India in the ongoing series.

Mohammad Siraj could see it coming and he did. The English crowd has rarely been more cordial when they host the Indian team. During Day 1, fans of the England team tried to get under Siraj’s skin at Headingley Stadium. The bowler has been the target on more than one occasion and has now learned the tactics of handling well. England fans started teasing the spectators after India’s poor performance on the first day of the third Test. Reportedly, someone from the stands threw the ball at Siraj as well. It was during the last session of the day’s play, when the crowd asked Siraj about the score in an attempt to improve him.

As the match was drawing to a close, Siraj was going back to his position after a delivery. That’s when he turned and decided to remind England that India were still ahead in the series. After India’s heroics at Lord’s in the second Test, he was expected to dominate the next Test. However, when the home team took control of the spectators, the matter was reversed. Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. Struggling to keep a single step right at Headingley, the visitors got off to a disastrous start.

The opening partnership did not work as KL Rahul was dismissed for zero at the hands of James Anderson. Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli again fell prey to Anderson’s edge, scoring 1 and 7 respectively before going back. The middle order put up a frightening performance as both Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant failed to cut the damage.

After Anderson’s brilliant spell, other England bowlers got to work as they dominated the Indian batting lineup and kept on picking up wickets. The Indian pacer failed to find a breakthrough and Siraj was brought into the attack much later. That fate could not change as he was keeping wickets. He finished with figures of 7-1-26-0 on the first day of the Test.
