England men’s all-rounder Moeen Ali has decided to take time off from his Test match career. The 34-year-old Ali made his Test debut in 2014 and represented England in 64 Test matches. He took 195 Test wickets including 5 five-wicket hauls and scored five Test match centuries during his career. Discussing his decision, Ali said: “I am 34 now and I want to play as long as I can and I just want to enjoy my cricket.
“Test cricket is wonderful, when you have a good day it is better than any other format, it is more rewarding and you feel like you have really earned it. “I will miss playing with the feeling of just hanging out with the boys, playing against the best in the world, but also from a bowling point of view, knowing my best ball I can get anyone out.” “I’ve enjoyed Test cricket but that intensity can sometimes be too much and I think I’ve done it enough and I’m happy and satisfied with what I’ve done.”
Ali hopes his Test career will inspire and open doors for other British Muslims to play for England. Ali said: “It always takes someone to inspire you or someone to think about what it takes to do what I can and I hope there are some people out there who are thinking like that.” Huh.
“I know he wasn’t English, but there was someone like Hashim Amla, when I first saw him, I thought if he can do it I can, it takes a little spark.
“I would like to say one day in 8-10 years time that Moeen made it easy for me. I have had people before who made it easy, so you hope to open the door for someone else. Ali thanked his coaches, captains and everyone in his family for their support during his Test career.
Ali said: “I have to thank Peter Moores and Chris Silverwood for being my coach and Peter for giving me my debut. I enjoyed playing Cookie and Ruthie as captain and I hope to be the way I do.” He is happy with what he played with.
“My parents are my number one, I feel like there was no way I would have made it without their support, every sport I played was for them and I know they are really proud of me.
“My brothers and my sister, I am truly grateful for the sacrifices she made to me and my wife and children, my wife and the patience she has during my bad days.
