A delegation has already met KPCC President DK Shivakumar. Former MP and minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, who accompanied Kumar to meet DK Shivakumar, told TOI that the issue was discussed with the KPCC chief and a decision would be taken by the central committee.
Sorake said: “DK Shivakumar asked me to arrange a meeting with Rajendra Kumar. So, we went together and met Shivakumar. There was a discussion between Shivkumar and Rajendra Kumar regarding the election.
In fact, former MLC Ivan D’Souza, AICC secretary PV Mohan, former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, former KPCC vice-president Manjunath Bhandari, Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC) vice-president Prasad Raj Kanchan, former chairman of Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Kripa Amar Alva and others are Congress candidates.
DCC President K Harish Kumar said that the list of candidates has been sent to Delhi. “We have no information about the candidature of MN Rajendra Kumar from the party. I know that a delegation including Congress leaders Gopal Pujari and Vinay Kumar Sorake has met DK Shivakumar along with Rajendra Kumar. Ultimately, the Central Committee will take a decision on this by Monday.
On meeting DK Shivakumar on Wednesday, Rajendra Kumar said, ‘No decision has been taken yet.
When asked whether he would contest as a Congress candidate, Rajendra Kumar said, “I will take a final decision after discussing with my supporters.”
The tenure of Congress’s MLC Pratap Chandra Shetty and BJP’s Kota Srinivasa Pujari, elected from the local constituencies of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, will end on January 5 next year. While BJP has almost finalized the candidature of Kota Srinivas Pujari, Congress is yet to take a decision. Shetty will not contest elections this time.
