Jaipur: Unhappy with the work started under the Smart City project in Jaipur, Kishanpol MLA Amin Kagji inspected walled city area with officials on Saturday.
The MLA, who himself drove the vehicle, was accompanied by Smart City Project chairman Bhawani Singh Detha and chief executive officer Awadhesh Meena. Inspection started from New Gate and took stock of the situation by visiting Sanjay Bazar, Chaura Rasta, Badi Chaupar, Hawamahal Road, Tripolia Bazar and Tadkeshwar Mahadev Temple. The officials had to face public outcry after the MLA investigated the dilapidated condition of the pawn. Under this work is going on for the last 6 years. The façade and heritage conservation work was to be done in all the markets here at a cost of Rs 14 crore, but was stopped after spending Rs 7 crore.
Jatin Khurana, a local shopkeeper, said, “Tender was again sought for the security of the next, but no progress was made. Also, the roofs of the verandahs are falling and water is dripping during the rainy season.”
Locals complained about the lack of clean-up work on the narrow lanes in the Walled City area and the lack of drainage repairs. Another shopkeeper said, “As per the proposal, the smart city was to spend Rs 6.5 crore, but after spending Rs 2 crore, the work came to a standstill.
In the recent past, the state capital had miserably failed to achieve the Smart City Mission’s good ranking. In the latest online rankings, Rajasthan Rajasthan State wise came first in the category. However, within the state, Jaipur ranked last among the four smart cities. Out of 100, it secured 28th rank, while Udaipurhandjob city And Ajmer 5th, 10th and 22nd place respectively.
An official source from Jaipur said, “Under Smart City, more priority is given on beautification projects rather than infrastructure improvement.”
