Mizoram says case registered against Assam Police for ‘theft’ of construction material

The Mizoram government on Sunday said it has registered a case against Assam Police personnel for allegedly “stealing” construction material from a project site near the border of the two northeastern states. Assam Police personnel enter Mizoram area at Zofai near Bairabi. Some construction material, including iron rods, was allegedly stolen from a bridge construction site in the town of Kolasib district, H Lalthalangliana, Deputy Commissioner of Kolasib district, told PTI.

The incident took place on Friday when the work of constructing a bridge to connect the paddy field of Mizoram’s first Chief Minister C Chunga with the main road was underway, he said. This region shares border with Hailakandi district of Assam. The Deputy Commissioner said that the bridge construction was a government project. “In connection with the incident, a police case has been registered against them (Assam Police) in Bairabi police station for theft of construction material,” he said.

Lalthalangliana also wrote a letter to his Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner regarding the incident on Saturday, urging him to take necessary action. In his letter, Lalthalangliana said that the incident or the bridge construction should not be linked to the border issue as it was done by the government to connect an existing road within the territory of Mizoram.

“However, the commission of an act by a Government servant which can be interpreted as theft of Government property is considered very dismal and very serious,” the letter said. The Zophai area of Bairabi is one of the major points of border dispute between Mizoram and Assam.

Violence erupted in March 2018 when office-bearers of Mizoram’s apex student body Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) attempted to build a wooden rest house in the area. Over 60 people, including seven Mizoram journalists, were injured in lathi-charge and firing allegedly by the Assam Police to disperse the crowd.

Three districts of Mizoram – Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit – share a border of 164.6 km with Hailakandi, Cachar and Karimganj districts of Assam.
