Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest mini-series Ms. Marvel is ticking all the boxes when it comes to minority representation and giving Bollywood Lots of reasons for fans to rejoice too. after mentioning Shahrukh Khan And Rithvij’s songs in the last episode, the third episode has completely included Bollywood as a part of the MCU. However, it is much more than that. Titled ‘Destined’ the third episode begins after the events of the second where Kamala Khan aka Miss Marvel was chased by a drone and saved by her friend Kamran.
The episode begins with Kamran’s mother telling her great-grandmother Ayesha and her legacy and takes us back to British occupied India. Ayesha, along with Kamran’s mother Najma and others, is in search of a magical bracelet that can help them go back ‘home’. However, Ayesha disappeared and since then she is here in our dimension. While narrating the story to Kamala, Najma reveals that they are jinns (very scary) and exiled in our dimension. He needs Kamala and a bracelet to go back to his home. They are also called spies.
However, sending them back home would mean inter-dimensional travel, which, while it makes no sense to speculate, is an extremely risky task. But the genie is in no mood to listen. While Kamala is happily dancing to Bollywood songs at her brother Aamir Khan’s wedding, they crash it only to be brutally attacked. Kamran decides to help him after realizing that his mother wants to kill Kamala. Along with him and Bruno, Kamala tries to fight secretly. Her hand flexion and cosmic power are harnessed and she has a narrow escape with Bruno. However, she and the agents behind the bracelet arrive at the scene and nab Kamran’s entire family.
While on the run with Bruno, Kamala accidentally exposes herself to Nakia, who is seemingly confused and angry. The episode ends with a call in Karachi from her Nani (Grandmother) who has the same vision of the train as Kamala had. She demands that both Kamala and her mother Muniba need to come to Karachi soon.
Unlike other recent Marvel series like Hawkeye or Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel has been less in action so far, but focuses on character arcs and strengthening their bonds with each other. Family values and their importance are emphasized throughout the episode- whether it is Muniba speaking candidly to Kamala or Yusuf talking to Aamir before their wedding.
The creators are also very careful and apologetic, representing their religion and Pakistani or South Asian cultures or traditions. Powerful moments occur in the simplest scenes and dialogue, such as a member of the mosque committee asking the agents to untie their shoes as they enter their place of religion to find an advanced human being.
The inclusion of Bollywood songs in the episode has created a flutter among fans who are happy to see the desi MCU wedding. In all, the three episodes that have aired so far characterize the series as a teen comedy mixed with action and family values. The series is also about finding one’s identity and finding out where he or she belongs. It’s too early to say whether it’s one of the MCU’s best, but we can certainly call it one of its unique and most unique shows.
