Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis resign from Pakistan coaching roles ahead of T20 World Cup

Lahore: Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis have resigned from their respective roles. Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday. Both Misbah and Waqar were appointed in September 2019 with one year left in their contracts. The PCB has announced that Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq will join the team management as interim coaches for the New Zealand series. Mushtaq currently serves as the Head of International Player Development at the National Center for High Performance. Razzaq was the coach of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa team, which won three trophies across all formats in the 2020/21 domestic cricket season.

It also said that the team management for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will be appointed in due course. The resignations of Misbah and Waqar come hours after the squads for the home series and the T20 World Cup were announced. “Quarantine in Jamaica after the West Indies series provided me with an opportunity to reflect on the last 24 months as well. Waqar said, “After Misbah shared her decisions and future plans with me, it was easy for me to resign as we moved into roles together, worked collectively as a pair and now stepped together.”

“Working with Pakistan bowlers including youngsters has been most satisfying as they have started showing progress now. The bio-secure environment has taken its toll in the last 16 months, something we never experienced during our playing days.”

“The next eight months will be busy and exciting for the Pakistan team and like before, I will continue to support and cheer them on. I would like to thank each and every member of Pakistan cricket team as we stood united in good and bad days and hope there are more bright days ahead.

PCB CEO Wasim Khan thanked both for their services. “PCB understands and respects Misbah’s decision. Cricket has not been easy for anyone in this unprecedented bio-secure world and Misbah clearly has the next six months of non-stop cricket in mind.

“Over the last 24 months, Misbah has given his best to the team and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. It has been an honorable decision by Waqar and we sincerely thank him for his immense work and commitment over the last two years and wish him all the best in the future.

“Both Misbah and Waqar have given a lot to Pakistan cricket in the long run and for that they deserve a lot of respect.”

The Pakistan team will gather in Islamabad on September 8 before flying to the country of New Zealand on September 11. The white-ball series will begin with three ODIs in Rawalpindi followed by five T20Is in Lahore.
