Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the first Khelo India Women’s Weightlifting League tournament on Thursday.

Although Chanu won the yellow metal, he missed an opportunity to improve his national record. Chanu lifted a total of 191 kg (86 kg + 105 kg) in snatch to win the gold medal in the women’s ranking event in senior, junior and youth categories.

In the clean and jerk, she lifted 105 kg in her first attempt, a far cry from her world record lift of 119 kg. He did not attempt a second or third lift in the section.

Chanu, once considered her weakness, is tweaking her snatch technique. She is consulting former weightlifter turned physical therapist and strength and conditioning coach in USA Dr. Aaron Horschig.

The former world champion, who is vying for a third Commonwealth Games medal in the quadrangle event next month, has been targeting the 90kg mark for a few years now.

The gap between Chanu and other Indian lifters in the category was on full display as second-ranked Dnyaneshwari lifted 21kg less than Manipuri, while there was a difference of 25kg for the membrane.

Dnyaneshwari Yadav 170kg (78kg+92) and former 45kg Asian Weightlifting Championship gold medalist Membrane Dalbehera 166kg (75kg+91kg) finished second and third respectively.

The tournament will help the Weightlifting Federation of India (IWLF) maintain a strong national ranking system, as well as provide additional competition to the country’s lifters.
