Minimum age 35 years, none above 70: PM Modi to fuel engine of growth with ‘youngest cabinet ever’

The youngest of the 36 new ministers is 35-year-old Nisith Pramanik, while the eldest is 69. There are five ministers above 65 and none above 70 years. Apart from Pramanik, the youth category includes Shantanu Thakur (38), Anupriya Patel (40), Bharti Praveen Pawar (42), John Barla (45).

There is a gap of eight years in the average age compared to 12 significant exits of leaders like Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Prakash Javadekar and Harsh Vardhan. The average age of those resigning is 64, with the youngest 50 years old and the eldest 73 years old. There were eight people above 65, while three were above 70.

This is the first reshuffle by PM Modi in his Council of Ministers since he assumed office for the second term in May 2019. It is expected that with Yuva Shakti, the Prime Minister will face the challenges of unemployment and skill shortage, especially when the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Apart from focusing on the youth factor, the Prime Minister also ensured record representation for SCs, STs and OBCs. PM Modi reiterated the government’s motto of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (development for all) on several occasions and said it is the responsibility of the Center to ensure justice for all. There is also a mix of regional and geographic variations, experiences, genders and communities.

The new cabinet took oath at 6 pm on Wednesday at Rashtrapati Bhavan and the portfolios are expected to be announced soon.
