JAIPUR: Graduates belonging to middle class are more vulnerable to marijuana, cannabis, cocaine, brown sugar, codex phosphate drugs and narcotics in the city, says Jaipur police Which has classified drug addicts on the basis of its Operation Clean Sweep running since October 2019.
Till June 26, they have conducted 727 operations and arrested 925 people who claimed to have broken the backs of drug smugglers. The socioeconomic analysis of drug addicts and traffickers has helped them to identify three categories of drug addicts in the city.
The report said, ‘BE, B.Com, B. Middle class students pursuing Pharmacy, B.Tech and coaching have been found taking drugs. Most of these students are poor in studies and they are taking these drugs under the influence of students of similar aptitude. Some students have become peddlers and suppliers to meet their medicine needs,” the report reads.
Police have also identified areas with high student residences like Mansarovar, Pratap Nagar, Muhana, Bajaj Nagar and Shiprapath. He claimed to have busted the drugs racket by conducting several raids in these areas.
The report further states that unemployed poor youth of the Muslim community living in slums are addicted to smack. “Due to their poor economic condition, they often resort to petty crimes. If they don’t get smack and brown sugar, they consume adhesives and whiteners,” read the report, which also pointed out that their families have rejected them. The vulnerable areas include Idgah, Bhatta Basti and Jalupura.
The last category comes from the upper class. The report states that young boys and girls belong to upper-class societies who consume cannabis and modern drugs in elite bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. “They have been found using drugs to bring adventure in their lives and to overcome boredom. Digant Anand, DCP Crime, Jaipur Police Commissionerate said that the number of such cases involving youth belonging to the wealthy class in the city is again a matter of concern.
The objective of Operation Clean Sweep is to make Jaipur drug free and it has been taken forward by reaching to the root cause of addiction. “Based on the analysis, we have taken a multi-pronged approach by reaching out to vulnerable communities, launching awareness campaigns and starting a 10-day rehabilitation center soon with the help of NGOs to mainstream drug addicts.” said Anand.
