Met Gala 2021 to have plant-based menu this year; meet 10 chefs

As part of its broader objective of diversity and inclusion, the 2021 Met Gala will feature its first entirely plant-based cuisine. The major fashion event, which was originally planned to take place in May but was postponed until September 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will focus on the theme of American fashion. Timothée Chalamet, vegetarian artist Billie Eilish, tennis sensation Naomi Osaka and National Young Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman will co-chair the 2021 Met Gala. Guests will be given chef-created, plant-based dishes for an annual fundraising event created in 1948 to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.

Previously, the Met Gala provided exclusively catered meals; However, this year, event organizer and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour tasked renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson to create a modern American dining experience that matched the event’s objectives of greater inclusion and diversity.

Farial Abdullahi, Naseem Alikhani, Emma Bengtson, Lazarus Lynch, Junghyun Park, Eric Ramirez, Thomas Raquel, Sophia Rowe, Simone Tong, and Fabian von Hauske are among ten NYC-based chefs who attended Samuelson’s. Chefs will collaborate to serve “picnic-style” dishes such as watermelon salad and roasted potato wedges to event attendees this year.

American food is experiencing a rebirth of its own, as shown by news this summer that famed NYC fine-dining restaurant Eleven Madison Park will be transitioning to a largely plant-based menu. Samuelson made it a point to capture the moment through the chefs of his choice, who vary from Instagram creators to chefs at well-known restaurants. While Emma is the first female Swedish chef to receive two Michelin stars, Fabian is the co-owner of hotspot Contra. Junghyun is the owner of Atomix, a Korean fine-dining establishment. Plus, the menu itself is completely free of animal products.

“We thought it was important to really talk about what’s happening right now—what’s happening—how food is changing in America,” Samuelson told Bon Appetit. “We want American food to be the future of plant-based food. That conversation is happening right now.” Ahead of the Met Gala, experts and Vogue will be publishing their recipes on the Instagram reels with #MetGalaChefs, a vegetarian version of the Row on Nicoise Salad for the first time.
