The ‘menstruation benefit’ model implemented by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kerala, is being considered for implementation across the state, said R Bindu

Higher Education Minister R Bindu said that it is being considered to implement menstrual leave in all the universities under the Higher Education Department. model implemented by Cochin Science University and technology (CUSAT), Kerala is being considered for implementation in the entire State.

The SFI-led union in CUSAT had requested for menstrual leave and the leave was granted on the basis of the request. Considering the health problems faced by the students during menstruation, the minister said that the state government is now considering to implement it in the entire state.

In each semester, Students need 75 percent attendance but after considering Menstrual leave, girl students can appear in the examination even if they have 73 percent attendance. This was the change that was brought about by CUSAT. Minister Bindu said that if it is implemented in all the universities then it will be helpful for the students. He further said that the SFI state leadership has given a representation in this regard.

Menstruation benefit in CUSAT has been extended to all female students of the University including students pursuing Ph.D. The order was submitted to the Academic Council for procedural approval and has now been approved and implemented.

“After considering the requests for menstrual benefits to female students, the Vice-Chancellor has ordered to sanction an additional 2 per cent for the shortfall in attendance of female students in each semester, subject to reporting to the Academic Council,” the joint university said. The registrar had said earlier.

A university official, however, said the exemption would be different for each student as it would depend on his/her attendance. “It will be different for each student. Every female student can claim two per cent of her total attendance as menstruation benefit. Hence the exact number of leave has not been mentioned in the order.”
