However, the plan was thwarted by the sudden surge of devotees and resulted in traffic chaos at the entry and exit points. The Mela police, however, claimed that they had blocked the entry of vehicles carrying devotees towards the banks of the Ganges and asked them to park in the parade and adjoining areas.
SP (Magh Mela) Dr Rajiv Narayan Mishra told TOI that, “The Mahashivratri snan – the last snan of Magh Mela Passed away peacefully as no untoward incident was reported.” He said that the last bath of Magh Mela on Tuesday is to ensure the safety of pilgrims and devotees coming to Magh Mela to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mahashivratri Snan. More than 3,000 police personnel were deployed for the purpose.
He said that additional police pickets have also been deployed at all the six ghats to control the rush of devotees on the banks of the Ganga. As more rural devotees flocked to bathe, the Mela Police also patrolled the roads leading to the Sangam. Senior officials were busy reviewing the security arrangements.
