Meghalaya has about 14,000 schools and more than 55,000 teachers, which is much higher than other small states in the northeastern region, remarked Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

Addressing the centenary celebrations of Jive Presbyterian Higher Secondary School here, the Chief Minister said the state spends about Rs 2,200 crore annually on these institutions.

According to Sangma, the expenditure is not enough and Meghalaya needs to work harder to be among the top performing states in the country’s education sector. He announced that an education commission would be constituted soon to look into all aspects of reforms in the education sector in the state.

During the function, the Chief Minister also announced Rs 20 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund for the expansion of the school building.
