Meghalaya government surrenders over Rs 5000 cr, attracts untapped funds

The opposition Congress on Thursday condemned the surrender of the state government’s total savings of over Rs 5,000 crore last year and said it speaks volumes about the overall focus and priority of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.

“If you cannot absorb the money that has been released to you, what happens is you are deprived of that fund status. If you delay by three years it means that you have lost more money. We have been deprived because the amount which should have come next year will not come,” Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma told reporters.

He was reacting to a CAG report that said the state government had surrendered Rs 5242.30 crore out of the total savings last year, refusing to use the savings for other developmental purposes.

“The priority and focus of the present government is not on those areas which can bring about a change in the progress and prosperity of the state. The speed at which it would have been seen has become chaotic,” Sangma said.

Stating that this concern was also raised in the Assembly, the Leader of Opposition said that he had mentioned some programmes, which were considered as low hanging fruits or ready resources made available to the government due to the initiatives of the previous government. Should have gone .

“Since we were writers at that time we know what those programs are. They (the present government) were taking money, they were sitting on money, they were not spending, you see. What they say is different but What is reality is a different matter. So all these facts and figures only confirm my point,” he said.

Referring to several pending projects, Sangma said that the condition of the medical college funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is completely stalled.

He also talked about funding by the World Bank for the road network under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and said that the programs under SARDP-NE are all supported and funded by JICA.

He said that state roads and state highways, inter-district roads and various other important roads which are considered as economically important roads are covered by the World Bank with funds under MITP.

Sangma also questioned the status of NH 127 (B), which according to him is one of the most important projects ever undertaken in the North East with a bridge over the Brahmaputra being the longest bridge over the river connecting Dhubri, Assam. He is going. For Phulbari in Garo Hills.

The Congress leader further alleged that there are serious irregularities in the utilization of funds.

“The fact that they are not able to submit the Utilization Certificates (UC) against the funds which they have received from various ministries shows that they have not utilized the funds for the purpose and that is why That they could not submit the UC and hence there is delay and hence the state is being deprived,” he said.
