Meghalaya CM demands panel to review AFSPA withdrawal across North East

New Delhi: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday demanded that the panel reviewing the withdrawal of AFSPA from Nagaland be expanded to the entire Northeast.

The Nagaland government on Sunday announced that a panel will be set up to probe the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland and submit its report within 45 days.

The decision to constitute the committee was taken during a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with Naga People’s Front Legislative Party leader TR Zeliang were present in the meeting.

It was also decided in the meeting with the Home Minister that disciplinary action would be initiated by the Court of Inquiry against the Army unit and Army personnel involved in the Nagaland firing case.

“It was discussed in the meeting that the Court of Inquiry would initiate disciplinary proceedings against the military unit and Army personnel directly involved in the otting incident and based on the investigation, action would be taken immediately,” an official statement said.

“The identified persons, who are facing investigation, shall be suspended with immediate effect,” it added.

The statement further said that the Assam Rifle Unit at Som will also be replaced with immediate effect.

Chief Minister Sangma had demanded the removal of AFSPA from the North East immediately after receiving information about the Indian Army disturbances in Nagaland’s Mon district on December 4, in which several civilians were killed.
