Within the next one month, several prominent leaders of the saffron party, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, are due to visit the northeastern state.

The saffron party has set itself a target of winning 40 out of 60 seats in the 2022 elections. The BJP unit led by N Biren Singh is seeking its second term in the state.

Heading the NDA government, Biren Singh formed the government in Manipur on March 15, 2017. However, it suffered a major setback in June 2020, when nine MLAs, including ministers, withdrew their support to the government, reducing it to a minority. Within a week, the intervention of the central leadership resulted in four NPP MLAs returning to the NDA, leading to the fall of the government.

Singh was successful in winning the trust vote, during which eight of the 24 Congress MLAs defied the party whip and abstained from voting. Thereafter Hey Henry Singh and six others resigned from the Congress.

Currently, the BJP-led NDA is in majority in the Assembly with 36 out of 60 seats – this includes 24 BJP MLAs and four each from the NPP and NDF, 1 of the LJP and three independents.
