As a result, many people who took the first dose in the first week of March 2021 had to postpone their second dose till May. His turn for the third dose would come in late January or February 2022.
However, most doctors, healthcare workers and frontline workers, who took their first dose in January 2021 and the second dose in February 2021, are eligible for the booster.
Politicians including Guardian Minister Nitin Raut took a booster dose and appealed to all eligible senior citizens to take the third dose at the earliest.
“I am glad that the booster dose is now available in Nagpur. We have absolutely no shortage of vaccines. Slots are available online. The process is very simple. So, I appeal to the people to get vaccinated,” Raut said.
Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) vice-chairman Dr Vinky Raghavani was one of the early bird doctors who received the booster dose. “Doctors and health workers understand the importance of the third dose, but my appeal would be especially to senior citizens. They should come forward for the booster. This will ensure their safety in the third wave and even further,” said Dr Raghavani.
Several senior citizens who spoke of taking the third dose on Monday said that they had received SMS notification on their mobiles. “I took the first dose in the first week of March itself. As soon as I got the SMS, I booked the slot yesterday and got the booking quite easily,” said Mandakini Shende, a retired teacher. “The third dose will bring an added sense of security,” she said.
At GMCH, 188 elderly people took the third dose. Maximum 288 took booster shot at Mahal Diagnostic Centre. In Laxmi Nagar, senior citizens were seen queuing up at the Ganesh temple library, while the Tilak Vidyalaya in Dhantoli completed vaccination of 133 elderly citizens.
Many senior citizens used to visit vaccination centers just to know when they would be eligible for a booster.
“I got infected in the second wave in April 2021, soon after taking my first dose. I recovered, but as per the guidelines, I was told to delay the second dose till July. Now, I will be eligible only in April 2022. The officials clarified this to me today,” said Manohar Diwan of Laxmi Nagar.
