New Delhi: Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Meerut on Sunday via the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and laid the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University.

PM Narendra Modi also paid floral tributes at the statue of Mangal Pandey, the hero of the Great Revolt of 1857.

Pandey was an infantryman in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) regiment of the British East India Company. He revolted against the British in 1857.

Before paying homage at Pandey’s statue, Modi visited the city’s Kali Paltan temple and offered prayers. He then visited the martyr memorial Amar Jawan Jyoti and paid homage to the martyrs of 1857.

The Prime Minister also visited the State Independent Museum and visited the exhibits kept there.

The university will be established at an estimated cost of about Rs 700 crore in Salwa and Kali villages of Sardhana town of Meerut.
