McDonald’s drops tomatoes from meals citing quality concerns; Netizen left disheartened

New Delhi: The northern and eastern outlets of American fast food chain McDonald’s have decided to “temporarily” remove tomatoes from their menu due to market shortage caused by the recent price hike.

However, McDonald’s India North and East did not confirm whether the increased prices of tomatoes in the market was the reason behind their removal from the menu.

“Due to non-availability of tomatoes conforming to our quality standards due to seasonal crop issues in farms in some regions, we are currently constrained to hold tomatoes,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.

A McDonald’s India-North and East spokesperson said, “We reiterate that this is not due to a price hike. This is only because of non-availability of tomatoes conforming to our quality standards.

He further informed that while the restaurants are mostly in the Punjab-Chandigarh region, where it has been able to get enough of the stuff, McDonald’s will continue to serve tomatoes on its menu.

Netizens react on Twitter

This has sent netizens into a tizzy on the internet and a user on Twitter even shared the picture of the notice put up by an outlet in Delhi’s Connaught Place.

The prices of ‘costly vegetables’ have skyrocketed in the past few weeks.

A few days ago, to ease the pressure on consumers, the Tamil Nadu government started selling tomatoes at a reduced price of Rs 60 per kg in about 82 fair price shops in Chennai.
