MCD Poll: Feel Empowered After Voting, Say Differently-Abled Voters

Being wheelchair-bound or walking with crutches was no deterrent for differently-abled people of Delhi who enthusiastically arrived at the polling booths to count their votes for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections on Sunday.

Praveen (56), whose family brought him to the booth in a wheelchair, said “every vote counts”.

“Everyone should come out and exercise their rights. Cleanliness was the main issue in my mind when I cast my vote.”

Hariom (70) reached the polling station with the help of crutches.

“There are many issues in our area and I don’t know if they will be addressed. But I knew I had to make sure my vote would count.”

Voting for the high-stakes civic polls in Delhi is generally being seen as a triangular contest between the AAP, the BJP and the Congress.

Over 1.45 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections to 250 MCD wards, the results of which could have ramifications beyond the national capital.

Ramu Yadav (55), who is blind, said he felt empowered to vote.

Kamal Kishore, suffering from paralysis for 15 years, reached the polling station in the morning.

“It is a right given to us by the Constitution and we should exercise it because every vote counts,” he said.

Eighty-four-year-old Kulbhushan Gupta, who came in a wheelchair, said that he has not missed voting in the last few years.

“I feel strong and confident when I vote. It empowers me and I feel I have done my duty.”

Asked what is his priority, Gupta said, “Of course, development is the main issue. I want my locality to be further developed and equipped with all the facilities it deserves.”
