Mangaluru: 23rd Mayor’s election is going to be held here Mangaluru municipal Corporation (mcc) has been postponed due to technical issues on Wednesday.
MCC commissioner Akshay Sridhar said that the election has been postponed as per the directions of the regional commissioner’s office. In a letter to the MCC commissioner, the regional commissioner’s office in Mysore has stated that the mayoral election is to be postponed in view of the Supreme Court order on the basis of a special leave petition relating to the state of Maharashtra.
Karnataka, through a notification, had reserved the post of mayor for the general category and deputy mayor for the Backward Class One Woman (BCAW) for the 23rd term. Although, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Dr KV Rajendra has sought clarification as to whether the Supreme Court order applies to elections in MCC as well. The government has yet to respond. Therefore, the election has been postponed, a release from the regional commissioner’s office said.
BJP leaders were busy selecting candidates for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor, but the regional commissioner’s circular postponing the election has irked the party with a clear majority in the MCC. In the elections held in November 2019, BJP got 44 wards, Congress 14 and SDPI got two seats. Mayor Premanand ShettyHis term ended on 1 March.
