Mysuru: Both the state and central governments have announced compensation to the bereaved families who have lost a loved one to COVID-19. However, many families are not looking forward to apply for compensation.
Mysore However, the Municipal Corporation (MCC) is intent on ensuring that all the bereaved families, both Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Above Poverty Line (APL) get the compensation they deserve.
As a result, MCC staff are now knocking at the door to compile data on those who have succumbed to COVID, and ensuring that necessary applications are filed to facilitate distribution of compensation.
However, MCC officials are struggling to trace the victims. So far, 2,436 people have succumbed to COVID in Mysuru district, most of whom were from the areas under MCC’s jurisdiction. Meanwhile, 240 people, though residents of Mysore but have died of Covid in other districts, will be compensated by the authorities here.
Many residents admitted that they were surprised when MCC officials reached their doorstep to inquire about the dead members of their family and asked if they had received compensation. “My mother died of Covid almost two years back. There was no proper arrangement for us to ensure that she gets proper treatment in a private hospital. Since we were classified as APL family, so We never expected compensation. But the MCC officials collected all the information from the private hospital, and gave us a compensation of Rs 50,000,” said Sudha BS, a resident of Yadavagiri.
Sudha appreciated the efforts of MCC on this front. “The MCC officials should be commended for taking such an initiative,” he said.
MCC commissioner G Laxmikanth Reddy said that over 1,200 people have succumbed to Covid in the city. Reddy said, “More than 800 people have submitted documents demanding compensation. We have started this drive to trace the families of each person who died of Kovid. The door-to-door survey was started a week ago. went.”
Additional Deputy Commissioner Manjunatha Swamy said that the checks to be given to the bereaved families are ready. “We have so far compensated 1,400 families in Mysuru district. Even in villages, we have completed all relevant paperwork. We have started door-to-door survey in Mysuru to get all the families to get the compensation due for them. In Mysuru city, very few families are yet to be traced, and they have been compensated,” Swamy said.
