MCC: Bandicoot to clear manholes in Mysore | Mysuru News – Times of India

Mysuru: The Mysuru Municipal Corporation ,mcc) has introduced a robot named a kind of mouse To clean the choked drains of the city after frequent complaints from people about manholes being underground or overflowing.
The recent introduction of robots has helped the civic body to get a five-star rating Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
This robot, costing around Rs 35 lakh, has been purchased from a Pune based company. The machine can detect a block in the manhole and de-silt, clean and unclog it automatically.
An MCC official said the robot was brought to the city in February and was used to open drains on an experimental basis. “The sanitary workers were trained to handle the machine. The machine arm can reach a depth of 7-8 meters inside a manhole and can lift 200 kg of garbage. The machine will detect the blockage and assist the staff . to remove it easily,” the official said.
Recently, robots were used to clear a block in manholes on Ramanuja Road near JSS Hospital and near Kalamandir.
In the last one month, the machine has been used to address 20 complaints which were of serious nature.
MCC commissioner G Laxmikanth Reddy said the robot has helped the corporation achieve a five-star rating in the recently conducted Safaimitra Safety Challenge by the Centre. ,hand made Cleaning is banned. Different types of machines were being used to clean the drains. We have procured advanced robotic machine which has helped the corporation to garner an additional 50 points and a 5-star rating.”
MCC UGD executive engineer KJ Sindhu told TOI that a proposal has been sent to buy advanced robotic machines to clean underground water drainage. “Advanced technology will have a camera attached to the machine that can detect a block or problem in the drainage and clean it more efficiently,” he said.
