Marylebone Cricket Club on Wednesday announced amendments to the rules of the game, meaning the gender-neutral term “batsman” will now be used instead of “batsman.”

The club, the sole authority on the rules of the game, stated that the use of the terminology would “help reinforce cricket’s position as an inclusive sport for all”.

The profile of women’s cricket has risen in recent years, with England’s victory over India in the 2017 World Cup final, being owned by the MCC, in front of a capacity crowd at Lord’s.

A crowd of 86,174 watched Australia beat India in the 2020 T20 World Cup final in Melbourne, and in August Lord’s broke the home women’s match record as over 17,000 fans watched the final of the inaugural hundred competition.

Jamie Cox, assistant secretary with responsibility for cricket and operations, said: “The MCC considers cricket a sport for all and this move recognizes the changing landscape of the game in modern times.”

“The use of the word batter is a natural development in our common cricket language and the terminology has already been adopted by many involved in the game.

“It is the right time for this adjustment to be formally recognized and we, as custodians of the laws, are pleased to announce these changes today.”
