As the pandemic fades in India, with automakers starting to show signs of recovery, May 2022 is one of the best months in the last few years. As per the recently released data, Maruti Suzuki, like every other month, has topped the list belonging to the Indo-Japanese brand with 8 out of 10 vehicles. Though they still face stiff competition from the SUV segment, the sales figures show that hatchbacks are always in demand. In the top 10 list, apart from 8 Maruti Suzuki cars, two other vehicles in the list are the Tata Nexon compact SUV at the second position and the Hyundai Creta mid-sized SUV at the eighth position.
There are 4 hatchbacks in the top 10, all from Maruti, 2 MPVs, both from Maruti, 3 SUVs, 1 each from Maruti, Tata and Hyundai and 1 sedan from Maruti itself. Based on last month’s sales numbers, Maruti Suzuki WagonR, the tallboy hatchback, has topped the list of best-selling vehicles with 16,814 units, showing a year-on-year growth of 706 per cent. The Tata Nexon became a compact SUV as the second best-selling vehicle in India, reflecting the growing love of Indians for the segment.
Going forward, hatchbacks are at the third, fourth and fifth positions in the list. Interestingly, these three are Maruti Suzuki cars, i.e. Swift, Baleno and Alto, selling 14,133 units, 13,970 units and 12,933 units respectively. After the hatchback, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is at the sixth position with 12,226 units sold in the month of May.
The lone sedan in the list at the seventh position, i.e. Maruti Suzuki DZire, with 11,603 units sold in the Indian market in the month of May, registered a 99 per cent growth in annual sales. Hyundai Creta is at eighth position, Maruti Suzuki Eeco at tenth position followed by Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza at ninth position.
