Matthew Wade has been served a demerit point by the ICC for breaching the Code of Conduct during Australia’s game against England.

The Australian wicketkeeper-batter, Matthew Wade has been handed a demerit point to his record for ‘showing dissent at an umpire’s decision’ in the side’s recent game against England that took place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday.

The offence is his first instance in the previous 24-month period. The ICC said in a media release that Wade had violated Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct and the announcement was made on Monday.

“Australia player Matthew Wade has been handed an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during a Group B match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against England at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday,” ICC said.

The incident happened during the 18th over of the first innings where Australia was batting. Wade seeming to withdraw from his batting stance had also played the delivery back to the bowler, Adil Rashid, but the umpire, Nitin Menon deemed the delivery to be legal which caused an argument between the Australian and the match official.

Wade was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”

The 36-year-old Wade admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC elite panel of match referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Joel Wilson, third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madangopal levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Australia however, managed to go on to win the game and look set to make it through to the Super-8s. They are set to take on Namibia in their third group-stage game at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on June 12.
