Matthew Hayden, Vernon Philander appointed as Pakistan coaches for ICC T20 World Cup

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden and former South African pacer Vernon Philander have been appointed as the coaches of the Pakistan team for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in the United Arab Emirates in October-November.

The decision comes on a day when former Pakistan batsman Ramiz Raja officially took over as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“Matthew Hayden is Australian, and he has World Cup winning experience and was a great player himself,” Raja was quoted as saying by espncricinfo.com.

He said, ‘It can be very beneficial to have an Australian occupying the dressing room. And Pakistan can definitely win the World Cup. All they need to do is improve their performance by an additional 10%. Vernon Philander I know very well, and he understands the bowling, and has a great record against Australia,” said King.

Hayden and Philander come days after Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling Waqar Younis resigned as the PCB was gearing up for a regime change.

Neither Hayden nor Philander have much coaching experience. The South African fast bowler actually retired from international cricket in 2020 itself.

Hayden, who retired in 2009, has worked as a commentator.
